ElevenLabs has made AI voice almost indistinguishable from a good human read — when the prompt is right. The trick is that "the prompt" here isn't a single text box. It is your script, your voice choice, your slider settings, and the punctuation you write between the words.
Note: ElevenLabs releases new models and features regularly. Specific UI options may change; the underlying principles are stable.
Modern text-to-speech is good enough for production audiobooks, video voiceovers, podcast intros, e-learning narration, and conversational agents. ElevenLabs is the platform most creators reach for first because of its voice quality, multi-language support, and voice cloning. Getting professional output is less about clever prompting and more about respecting how the model interprets a written script — pacing, punctuation, emphasis, and the right voice for the brief.
This tutorial covers picking the right voice, writing scripts the model reads naturally, using stability and style sliders, and the small punctuation tricks that change a delivery from robotic to convincing.
You can write the best script in the world and it will fail with the wrong voice. ElevenLabs offers stock voices, community voices, and custom clones. A few principles for choosing well:
The biggest leverage in AI voice is the script itself. Models pronounce written text — so it pays to write the way a human would read aloud.
A script that will sound flat
Welcome to our podcast about AI tools we love and how
they have helped our team work smarter and faster across
many different projects and departments.
One long breath. No natural pause. The model gets through it but loses the listener.
A script written for delivery
Welcome to the show.
Today, we're talking about AI tools — the ones we actually
use every day. Not the hype. The handful that have made
real changes to how our team works.
So: which ones, and why? Let's get into it.
Short sentences. Em-dashes for thought pauses. Single-line paragraphs trigger longer pauses. Em-dashes and the colon both shape the rhythm.
Other punctuation tricks that work in ElevenLabs (and most modern TTS engines):
ElevenLabs exposes a few sliders that change the read substantially. Treat them as part of your prompt.
A useful starting trio for narration: stability ≈ 0.55, similarity ≈ 0.75, style ≈ 0.15. Adjust by listening, not by guessing.
Names, brand terms, acronyms, and loanwords are where AI voice trips most often. Two reliable fixes:
For acronyms: write "NASA" as "NASA" if you want a word-style read, and as "N. A. S. A." if you want letter-by-letter. Add full stops or hyphens to control the difference.
Take a 200-word paragraph you wrote in prose style and rewrite it as a script: short sentences, em-dashes for reflective pauses, single-line paragraphs for emphasis. Generate both versions in the same voice and compare how the rhythm changes.
Pick three finalist voices for a project you have. Generate 60 seconds of the same real script in each. Listen with eyes closed. Pick the one that matches the brand best — and write down why, so future choices are quicker.
Build a 5-entry pronunciation dictionary for your brand (product name, founder names, market-specific terms). Generate a sample script that uses each term. Confirm every one is correct before adding more.
